In my continuing quest to watch everything Callum Keith Rennie has ever been in, I watched an episode of Smallville (s5e18 - Fragile) yesterday, in which - surprise! - CKR plays a cardboard baddie with - surprise! - no redeeming qualities. *sigh*

He looked pretty good, though, so at least the bits where he was on screen weren't a complete waste of my time, and he gave the character enough moral ambiguity that I wanted things to work out for him - which I don't think was the intention of the script. Maybe I'm just conditioned to sympathise with characters played by CKR, even if they're supposed to be completely amoral and despicable...

What tickled me most was the description of him by one of the other characters as "good looking in that psycho killer sort of way." Hee.

Okay, back to watching The Unquiet Dead, today's episode in my epic rewatch with [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako of the Ninth Doctor's arc - discussion here in [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako's lj.

"Fragile" - ? I suspect that's one of the season 5 episodes I never managed to force myself to watch, as Smallville was becoming more painful for me to watch, episode by episode... You know that sinking feeling when a fandom goes bad? and you can't bear it any more?

Or maybe I watched it and have blocked it from my memory. What a waste of CKR.

Reminds me of the time Peter Wingfield was in Sentinel. Sigh.

It's about the little girl who can control glass and is suspected of killing her foster mother - only it turns out to be her evil father who did it, and he also killed the girl's mother years previously, all because he wants his daughter back. Very meh. And CKR was almost completely wasted. Grrr. The man can act - he deserves so much more than the default (goodlooking) psycho killer role!

You know that sinking feeling when a fandom goes bad? and you can't bear it any more?

Not really - lucky me! - though I've had inklings of it with BSG. And I doubt that Doctor Who will ever be as shiny (for me, anyway) as series one with Nine and Rose.

Oh my goodness. Yes, I remember now. Even CKR. And that wasn't even one of the worse ones.

I doubt that Doctor Who will ever be as shiny (for me, anyway) as series one with Nine and Rose.

X-Files was the worst case. And Smallville, though I never expected it to continue as it was in first season - it was inevitable that the Clark/Lex split would happen, and be painful, though I didn't anticipate how awful Lana Lang would become. The Professionals and Horatio Hornblower never let me down. Lord of the Rings will forever be perfect. As is Battlestar Galactica, so far. Doctor Who - well, one episode has been problematic for me, and Ten is not Nine, but I still love it. In a way, it's the opposite problem - it's the material before that, that I'm afraid to watch. All forty years' worth of it.

I'm right there with you. And I will probably get stoned at the next con I go to, but I just don't care for DT. So I'm kind of 'meh' about the 10 series.

Oh noes! *g* I did have a brief intense crush on DT but it seems to have cooled off rather... Nine, OTOH, I will never not fancy - and the same goes for Christopher Eccleston.

I'm sorry that we only have one series with CE - but I suspect the fact that they only had 13 epsiodes for the Ninth Doctor's story is part of what makes series one so perfect. That, and the slow reveal of the Doctor's backstory, the development of Rose's character and and the deepening relationship between the two of them. I'm really enjoying rewatching the episodes - might I tempt you to join the discussion?

At present Tennant has a lot of fans, but it seems likely he'll be gone at the end of series 4, so at that point you'll have a whole new Doctor to be looking at and we can go through the readjustment process all over again.

I like David Tennant just fine but his Doctor seems way more superficial to me, and consequently less interesting. I also have a bit of a grudge for how he treated Martha and Jack, and that's another subject.

LOL, sort of a meta comment on CKR himself.

fajrdrako: I've been slogging through Smallville, even though I'm so close to just quitting. The Lana Lang Show just gets worse and worse, pushing other characters aside for the sake of her story. Blah. I came for the epic friendship-to-enemies story.

(I should learn to post all my responses in *one* message...sheesh.)

Yes, and it made me laugh, but I'd hate to see him get typecast. If he isn't already. *sigh* He needs to play more characters like Duck.

Yes, and it all gets more and more arbitrary. I came to see the whole series from Lex Luthor's point of view, and it just didn't add up. At some point I could stand it no longer, and stopped watching.

The whole series would have been so much better without Lana, but instead, they made her the protagonist. Faugh.

What kills me the most is that Tom frakking Welling was directing CKR. It hurts my brain. He is not worthy in any way. I hope Callum was self-directing, oy . . .

Tom Welling being the actor who plays Clark Kent, right? This was my first ever episode of Smallville, you see. ::mutters darkly about how it's probably also my last::

I don't regret watching it, though, because CKR does make a pretty psycho killer. *g* I just wish there was more good stuff with him in it. Someone was saying recently - and I can't remember who, but I agree wholeheartedly - that what Callum needs (and deserves!) is to be cast as the lead in a really good 6-episode Canadian series. After all, PG and HD have had Slings & Arrows and Durham County respectively, so it's only fair (to Callum and to us!) that he gets a chance to shine in something equally brilliant.

::rereads convoluted sentence and wonders where I left my coherence::

You are correct. /o\ IMO, he's barely fit to act near Callum, let alone direct him. But tha'ts my thinking.

He was so, so pretty. <3 I saved many screencaps.

And ITA! Callum needs a showcase drama. Something he can really rock (which is most anything decently written). And not be evil or loserish in. Sigh. And you're right, everyone's got on but him . . . PG, HD, Outerbridge . . . it is time for CKR!!
