To quit or not to quit?

I've been watching Twitch City and I just don't get it. I just... don't. This makes me sad because the impression that I got from Canada fandom was that it's well worth watching. So, yes, I'm disappointed and wondering why I'm not getting it...

I'm six episodes in, halfway in other words, and as of this point, I can't get past Curtis being a lazy selfish money-obsessed manipulator, Hope is a nitwit with a pathetic faith in the niceness of other people, Nathan is just plain horrible and I suspect that I only found Newbie unobjectionable because he's played by Callum Keith Rennie.

So - HELP!! If you love Twitch City, please PLEASE fill me in on what makes it appeal to you. Does it all come together in the next six episodes? And is there more Callum or have we seen the last of Newbie? Because I am dangerously close to saying WTF and abandoning it in favour of something more rewarding. Gah.

On reflection, I do like bits of it. Like the catfood dance and Hugh being so completely unimpressed - baleful stare is a good way of describing it. Lesser beings than Newbie would have shrivelled up and died.

I want to like it, dammit. Part of the problem, I think, is that I had expectations. Rather high ones. And then the show comes along and instead of being happy that it's dorky and vaguely amusing, I'm sitting and moaning that it hasn't swept me off my feet...

I'll persevere for a bit. It may be that I'll enjoy the second season more, now that I have more idea what to expect (and what not to expect!). And even if I still don't get it to the degree I'd like to, well, hey, I'll always have the Cat Food Dance and Hugh's baleful gum-chewing Stare of Death. :)

I have unholy love for the Cat Food Dance. Hugh and Callum are so clearly thisclose to cracking up the entire time, and I adore it. It is possibly the happiest ten seconds of my fannish life. Because I HAVE A PROBLEM. Hee. (Did you see Hugh's EYES, though? Ngggh.)

But yes. The show is complete crack, basically--I remember saying to [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup when we were first watching it, "You know, I don't really know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this." Hee. It's a brand of crack I can embrace, but I totally understand why it wouldn't work for everyone. And I think some episodes are much better than others.

Callum is very hot in "Shinto Death Cults." Just, you know. In case you were wondering. ;)
