I've just managed to make my pc's dvd player region-free - hurrah!
It wasn't straighforward and it was very frustrating. The internet yielded nothing useful in terms of region-hacks for the Sony D22A, but it did eventually provide the information that the drive isn't really a Sony at all, but a rebranded Liteon 1633S. Finding a region-hack once I knew the actual brand and model number was a doddle - all I had to do was download and install a tiny little exe file and voila, I have a drive that uncomplainingly accepts my Slings and Arrows dvds as happily as it plays my Doctor Who discs.
And I DID IT ALL ON MY OWN. \o/
