What do you get if you cross Doctor Who with The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

Well, on a good day, with a measure of luck, you end up with [livejournal.com profile] owlyscribblings' brilliant fic the people you meet (the things are also people). It's very cleverly done - the style is pure Douglas Adams, and Ford and Arthur are perfect, but she's somehow got Rose and the Ninth Doctor down pat as well. Find out what happens when Arthur's apparently neverending quest for a cup of tea intersects with Rose and the Doctor shopping for supplies... The first two parts are up; I can't wait for the third (and final) part.

Just very very occasionally, clicking on a random fic link fom [livejournal.com profile] who_daily actually leads to finding a spectacularly good fic - hurrah!

Famous Historical Personage by [livejournal.com profile] grapefruitzzz

A fic rec that’s also a bit of a fandom in-joke. The Ninth Doctor visits 18th century Venice and calls on one Giacomo Casanova. Featuring boots, bananas and...yes, dancing. For anyone who hasn’t seen the recent BBC miniseries, let me just say that you really need to picture Casanova looking like this (or this!) in order for the twist at the end to have the intended impact.

I haven't been that impressed by any of the recent crop of post-Doomsday Doctor Who fics - for much the same reason that I firmly believe that it was Lymond's son who was killed in Dorothy Dunnett's Pawn in Frankincense and rarely like fics which let Archie Kennedy live on after Retribution i.e. that fixits tend to dilute the power of the original story.

Then I came across [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs' I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and it knocked me over and then trampled all over my heart. Because it's not a fixit, it's more of a "what if" set in the future. What if the Eleventh Doctor was unable to resist going back in time to meet a sixteen year old Rose?

It's funny and clever and scorchingly hot and heartbreaking all at once - yes, it's that good. This is why I read fanfic - for the stories that surprise and delight and just have to be shared!

And now for something completely different:

A Sort of Man by [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs: post-regenerative Ten fic that takes a gorgeously playful and smutty look at the new new Doctor exploring the question of what sort of man he is. Turns out, Ten’s a Doctor who is very aware of his sexuality, particularly where Rose Tyler is concerned, and he “looks forward to burning his tongue”. One of the joys of fanfic is that it can go places and explore ideas that the actual show never will. And that’s what this fic does, with breathtaking mindblowing brilliance that I can’t recommend highly enough.

ETA: If you like the above fic, then you'll probably also enjoy Give and Take, also by [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs. It's a short sort-of-sequel, and is sweet and very hot as well as being proof that really good porn relies on really good characterisation.

Being bored at work has some benefits: here are the first two of the promised recs.

So Let the Bells Ring Out by Doyle. Set shortly after The Christmas Invasion. Mickey and the Doctor are left in each other’s company, and they bond over reassembling Jackie’s microwave. I'm still laughing about post-regenerative Ten being too fragile to help with the washing-up.

Moments of Revelation by [livejournal.com profile] handful_of_sky. Doctor Who/Firefly crossover. The Doctor and River, and pain and love and wishes that maybe come true. I watched Serenity again last night – that’s the effect this fic had on me.
