The opening line (took it off Amazon): When Mr Peter Knoppert began to make a hobby of snail-watching, he had no idea that his handful of specimens would become hundreds in no time.
(It's been 30+ years since I read it so I don't remember details--mostly just my visceral response.) Erm, basically he forgets to go into the snail room for a while. When he finally does, they're everywhere and start crawling all over him. It was when they crawled into his mouth that I lost it. Which still sounds fairly gross to me now but it really imprinted itself on my youthful brain.
