I've just read Lois McMaster Bujold's Winterfair Gifts for the first time. It's wonderful. In many ways it reads more like fanfic than original fic - it focuses on a minor character at an important event, and it's perfect because not only do you see Miles and Ekaterin and Cordelia and Aral through the viewpoint character's eyes, but he also gets his own plot in which he gives (and receives!) some unexpected Winterfair gifts.

I found it absolutely charming. It's like a very accomplished fanfic - by the author herself!

ETA: Has anyone else read a fanfic online about Taura and Roic as a couple dealing with the fact that Taura's genetic engineering means that she doesn't live very long? I don't remember the details of the fic all that clearly but I do remember that it was very good! I can't find it again, and it's driving me mad, so I would really appreciate a link, if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

It's called Lies and it's by [livejournal.com profile] mamadeb and it's here and it really is most amazingly wonderful, yes.

I hadn't read any Taura fanfic - thanks for the info!

I too only read Winterfair Gifts recently, and enjoyed it - though I found myself wishing it was a full novel and that we could get more of Miles and Ekaterin themselves in the story - their viewpoints and feelings.

Mind you, I just want more Vorkosigan stories. On any terms.

While we're on the topic of fanfic, is there any chance that you can post Eye of the Wind online somewhere accessible before the end of the month?

You see, I'm driving (at the tiller of?) the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van this month, and would dearly like to be able to rec it. I mentioned on [livejournal.com profile] inlovewithnight's lj recently that you'd written a fic that had performed the unlikely feat of reconciling me to the idea of Horatio/Pellew. [livejournal.com profile] commodorified knew what I was talking about, and she joins me in saying:

Please please post it so that I can rec it. Please? ::smiles hopefully::

Well, okay, yes, I can post it. If I don't do it this weekend, kick my ankles and remind me, okay?

I'll make sure to look at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van this month!

Hurrah! :)

That was surprisingly easy. *g* Right, then, I can dismantle my bribe list: it featured Twistees, rabbit, even lampuki pie...

Heh: throw in a bottle of Kinnie and I'd do anything you command. Anything.

But Twistees wouldn't go amiss either.

I'm sure you've seen this item somewhere or other:

but I think of you when I see it just because I saw Wallace and Gromit with you.

Now that is worth knowing. ;)

I had seen the giant rabbit story, actually. My reaction was to wish they'd called in Anti-pesto with their humane bunny vac, rather than getting someone to try and shoot it, poor thing.

I watched W&G again with my mum not long after seeing it with you, and particularly enjoyed the way Ralph Fiennes sounded like he was having such fun as the villainous Victor.

I can't think of too many situations in which I don't enjoy Ralph Fiennes. Or his voice. I first saw him as a villain (Edmund in Lear) and he was absolutely chilling.

Well. Yes. Um, I'd have to agree. ;)

And with that thought clutched firmly to my bosom, I'm off to bed...

With that thought, I'm going to search the library catalogue for Ralph Fiennes movies I haven't seen yet. There must be something....
