I haven't been that impressed by any of the recent crop of post-Doomsday Doctor Who fics - for much the same reason that I firmly believe that it was Lymond's son who was killed in Dorothy Dunnett's Pawn in Frankincense and rarely like fics which let Archie Kennedy live on after Retribution i.e. that fixits tend to dilute the power of the original story.

Then I came across [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs' I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor and it knocked me over and then trampled all over my heart. Because it's not a fixit, it's more of a "what if" set in the future. What if the Eleventh Doctor was unable to resist going back in time to meet a sixteen year old Rose?

It's funny and clever and scorchingly hot and heartbreaking all at once - yes, it's that good. This is why I read fanfic - for the stories that surprise and delight and just have to be shared!

I completely agree with you about diluting the power, that's exactly how I feel. Tragedy has its own strength: look at Shakespeare and the Greeks. Modern Americans want a happy ending every time, it's very weird. I know it, intellectually, but my gut wants happy.

Anyway, am going to read the fic now.

I think I like my tragedy to be about the personal cost of doing the right thing. Works with Lymond choosing Khaireddin to be sacrificed in order to stop Gabriel, and with Archie choosing to sacrifice himself for Horatio. Another example on the same lines: Frodo Baggins. How much less powerful would the ending of LotR have been if Tolkien had had Frodo settle down happily with Sam in his beloved Shire?

So, did you enjoy the fic? :)

Thank you for the extremely awesome fic.

And I have A Theory as to where this particular plot bunny came from. It's a reaction to the constraints of the bigdamnwhofic being all in Rose pov. All that suppressed Doctorishness found an outlet. *g*

That and good old procrastination. ;0 I'm up to 7000 works on the sequel (eep) and haven't even gotten to the sex yet! *headshake* I'll get back to bigdamnwhofic soon, but until then, I believe I need to decide on Rose's exact tone when she says, "You used me."
