Just home from work, and I'm itching to watch yesterday's episode of Supernatural, the one before the last for this season.

But first I wanted to post my entirely unspoiled speculation about how the boys might manage to get out of Dean's deal with the Crossroads Demon. Or if not actually break the deal, find some way of preventing or postponing it or something, dammit! Because the terms of this deal were that Dean gets dragged off by the Hounds of Hell once his year is up, and that's JUST NOT ON.

What I'm really scared might happen - and this is not a Good Thing, not at ALL, in the SPN-verse - is for Dean to get himself turned into a vampire. Because vampires are technically dead but are in fact a bit like zombies in that they're the walking dead. They also appear to "live" forever, but we don't really know what happens to the person's soul when they're turned. So I don't know if this would be a way of breaking the deal, but the show has gone to some lengths to make the point that although most vampires prey on humans, they do have a choice and we've met a few who have chosen not to harm humans. And then season four could focus on the boys trying desperately to find some way of reversing the change and making Dean human again...

The other "solution" is what [livejournal.com profile] devilpiglet has happen in her utterly brilliant fic ...Favors the Brave. I won't spoil the fic for you, because the careful build-up to a conclusion that seems both inevitable and perfectly in character is worth reading unspoiled. Though having said that, the two (no more than two, right? Or maybe three?) people on my flist who are into SPN have almost certainly read it. But the "solution" that Sam finds in this fic is just so perfectly Sam, and Dean's reactions are spot-on too, and the only reason I don't think the show will actually go there is that it would make for a season of extremely expensive special effects. ::iz cryptic::

Of course, the show probably won't go down either of these paths. Heh, most likely chain of events is that saving Dean will require Sam to realise his potential as the Yellow Eyed Demon's heir, the Boy-King referred to in the season's opening episode. Because Sam has been trying so hard to escape even acknowleging any sort of demonic potential that it would be deliciously angsty to have him own to this side of himself in order to save Dean, who only made his crossroads deal in the first place to keep Sam alive and safe...

Okay, enough of this. ::takes the plunge::
