Ok, so I promised [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako Gerard Way picspam but have just spent two hours collecting the following links, so I'm going to post them instead. The picspam will be forthcoming, eventually - and hey, anticipation is half the fun! Isn't it? ::grins evilly::

Teenage Vanya and the Kraken, and their Punk Band shenanigans! It's a NEW Umbrella Academy story: Anywhere But Here. ETA: Slightly older story, Kraken-centric this time: Safe and Sound.

Interesting article about TUA with lots of quotes from Gerard and from Gabriel Ba.

Gabriel Ba sees MCR in concert in Brazil and draws them!

LONG interview with Gerard in which he says, "I don’t think it’s going to be for a long time, but you will definitely see what happened to the Horror." Eeeee! The other thing I want is backstory on Number Five i.e. what was he referring to when Dr Pogo asked about the three individuals who accosted them in the diner?

Videos of Gerard's NY and Boston signings on the release of the first UA issue. UA-style Argyll sweater! The turtle! The dog poop from the cemetery!

More interviews:

Dark Horse Scott Allie interview

TALKING UMBRELLA ACADEMY WITH GERARD WAY.

CATCHING UP WITH GERARD WAY & THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

And how awesome is this? I want one.

Thank you so much! That link to the Gabriel Ba concert comic was the best. That was wonderful.

After exchanging comments with you about MCR I went on a YouTube search and spent the evening listening to their music. And then again, when I was doing yoga this morning.

Eagerly awaiting the picspam. Really. Where'd you get the icon? did you make it?

If this link (http://www.youtube.com/profile_play_list?user=rosiespark) works, it should keep you occupied for quite some time... ;)

Not sure which link is my favourite - I'm just happy I've collected them all in one post for future reference!

The icon is by [livejournal.com profile] bekie098. I think it's from a screen cap from the NME interview. See the first two videos on my MCR interviews playlist on YouTube. Worth watching!

Looking forward to it. Can't watch from work, though. [Grump] I came in this morning to find my computer acting strangely, and I can't access the server where all my work is.

Am I bored yet?

P.S. I also want the Umbrella Academy umbrella. It's brilliant.

Did you notice all the broken black umbrellas on the floor at Hargreeves's mansion? You can see them when Spaceboy arrives from the moon, and possibly in a later scene or two. Another throwaway detail which is yet to be revealed. We hope Gerard's going to let us in on the secret, anyway. I mean, why the Umbrella Academy? :)

Oh, and if you have the individual issues rather than the trade, I don't know if you've seen the dedication?

"To my wife Lindsey, for being my umbrella."

Awwww!

That's lovely! No, I didn't see it - haven't got the TPB. Is there anything else, like an introduction, in the TPB?

Yeah, I'd love more of the Academy background. And I'd love to see some of the characters again.

It's frustrating, in a way - there's obviously so much more story that what we've seen so far feels like just being given a taste without being allowed to grab a spoon and dig in...

Write faster, Gerard!

There's an intro by Grant Morrison, as well as the Free Comics Day story and a two-page teaser that was originally released online. Also lots of sketches, including Gerard's concept drawings for the main characters. Wish I could scan them for you!

I think I'll try to get the public library to order the TPB! That's the problem with buying the individual issues - you get them earlier, but you don't get the complete package of goodies.

Ah, but you have the Encyclopedia Umbrellica entries that are missing from the TPB! And other stuff, like Hargreeves's notes on the children?

In an ideal world it would be good to have both the originals and the TPB.

Hmm, like wanting to have multiple copies of Dunnett and Tolkien, just for the cover art or the preface...

Okay, I confess to having just ordered the Limited Edition of The Black Parade, purely for the black velver box and 64-page book(let) that come with it. The cd is exactly the same as the one I've already got.

Obsessed, much? *g*

What, do we know people who do that? (blush)

It's frustrating but it's also good - we wouldn't want to feel it was so simple a story that what we saw was all there was to see. As it is, there's this implication of a complete universe and a whole spectrum of still-untold stories.

Is he writing more? Continuing in that world? Yeah, I know, I'd have the answer if I could listen to all those interviews - ! Or maybe look at the Dark Horse website.

Intentionally.

CC - I’ve read the first series now a couple of times and it’s like a “Simpsons” episode. I don’t want to compare it to anything, really, but the second or third time you read it, you pick up on little things in the background. Like the bulletin board Spaceboy had and different little things like that.

Are those little things something you and Gabriel (Ba) intentionally put in?

Way: Yeah, everything that’s in there is very intentional. Gabriel is very good and you can ask those things of him. You can say “Hey, in the background really small I need this to be in there.” And he’ll make sure it happens.

Some of it is stuff that is not for the current situation. Some of it is stuff that may appear later, or may not. That’s another one of beauties of the series. It’s not about throwing red herrings out there, but it’s about throwing ideas out there that if we want to do something with them later we can. If not, it’s no big deal.

And yes, he's writing the second series. And I know he's talked about doing several more series after that. Hurrah!

CC - In the future, are we going to see more flashbacks of the “Umbrella Academy” and how they were as a young team together?

Way: In series 2, I just finished the first issue, you’re going to see them as children again. I think it’s really a fun way to start each series with them as children. Then throughout, when they’re older, you can see some flashbacks.

Nothing in comics is ever accidental.

I think some of the ideas are visual, others thematic - so it looks promising for the future. Do you know whether sales were good?

I think sales were good - I read somewhere that there were second printings. I'm sure a lot of MCR fans who don't normally buy comics bought it! Me, frex. *g*

And I know it doesn't reflect sales, but the series got 3 Eisner nominations, which must be hugely gratifying to Gerard and Gabriel and everyone else involved. If you get a chance to watch the videos of the signings (the fifth link in my post), do, because it's great to see how happy he is about just seeing the first issue in print. ::hearts comic-geek Gerard::

Always a good sign!

Eisner nominations are good too, and may affect sales in future - people tend to seek out things that are nominated for, or win, Eisners.
