First piece of news: I have a new obsession. Yes, it's reached obsession level, it's official. I am obsessed with Ioan Gruffudd. As Horatio Hornblower in particular, but I wouldn't actually say no to him in any incarnation... This is a brilliant site with tons of video and audio clips - I'm busily downloading and viewing. We must feed our obsession, oh yes we must. /Gollum voice *g*

I feel I must have seen him in something other than Wilde, in which he only has a bit part and is close to unrecognisable anyway. He's a bit of a chameleon, which is something I like in an actor - Viggo Mortensen being the classic example, IMO. *scratches head and ponders previous Ioan sightings on film* Nope, can't come up with any, yet I knew his name and could put a face to it even before the excesses of the last few days'. By “excesses” I mean that I have devoured the first five Hornblower episodes in three days, cheered on Horatio as he progressed from shy stuttering Midshipman to Lieutenant and leader of men, and squeed endlessly over the curls, the look of thoughtful resolve, the uniforms, the slashy subtext... I have even got a very rough draft of a short fic! Heh, I did say it's an obsession. *g*

And this evening the plan was to watch the sixth episode - having finished watching Mutiny at too late an hour last night to watch the second part (Retribution), and having left Horatio in a prison cell about to be court-martialled for mutiny, I can't wait to see how it turns out. Yet at the same time, I almost don't want to watch it - mainly because I know that it's the last episode to feature Archie - and I'm dreading a less than happy ending. Also preying on my mind is the fact that Archie was advancing towards Captain Sawyer when the latter fell down the hatch - was this what Archie intended? And will Horatio try to keep silent about it in order to protect Archie? I'm literally chewing my lower lip in an agony of frustration... I know, I could be watching it instead of typing this. But I ought to go to bed soon, and if I start watching it, I know I lack the willpower to stop before the end. And I need to be lucid for work tomorrow. ::sigh:: I think I'll take the phone off the hook tomorrow evening, though...

The reason I was deprived of today's HH fix was a phonecall from Gordon, an ex from a few years back who is now a very good friend, in spite of a very painful end to the relationship. We have wonderful conversations - based on a shared (very silly) sense of humour and a love of words. He's even a dictionary reader - today we were employing two dictionaries - the Chambers 20th Century (me) and the standard multi-volume Maltese-English dictionary on his end. I learnt two new words - hwyl and ithyphallic - I'll have to see how to work those into future posts. *g* Gordon is also a book geek, though with differences. I am a dedicated re-reader, he almost never rereads. He reads mainly contemporary fiction (so-called "literary" fiction) while I tend to prefer genre fiction (historical and scifi/fantasy). But we get on like a house on fire. Okay, this is the point where everyone goes: Why on earth did you leave him? Well, let’s just say it was complicated. (Yeah, when isn’t it?)

Quick Pixel update before I take myself off to bed. She’s so much better that I can hardly believe it. I keep expecting something to go wrong… The eye is a write-off and I suspect she can feel the pellet in the jaw when she eats – but she’s as lively and perky as she ever was: chasing Billy up the stairs and rocketing out of the catflap in hot pursuit of him, playing with me, purring and being so affectionate that I look at her and get a lump in my throat. :) And the new fence on the roof is up, so she’s confined to the house, the courtyard, terrace and roof, and a couple of neighbouring roofs. Billy and Pablo can still come and go as they please, and I feel happier knowing that the Pix is safe. BTW, she says thank you to everyone who sent good wishes and kisses – and so do I!

'Ithyphallic' is one of life's essential words; I'm surprised that you managed without it. ;)

You've probably seen Ioan in 'Great Expectations'.

Sadly enough, I haven't seen Great Expectations. We used to get some British television programmes here, but not any more. And I don't have cable. Actually, my television is connected to the video and dvd players, and to the power socket. And not to anything else. A setup I apparently share with Viggo Mortensen.

I almost ordered Solomon and Gaenor on dvd yesterday, and was only restrained by the thought of sliding into bancruptcy and not being able to feed my cats. ::heaves dramatic sigh:: It's not available in European format, so it's lucky my dvd player is multiregion. So if I decide to get it, I'll probably not be able to resist adding The English Patient special edition, also only avaialble from the US, to the order - the economies of scale, you know. ;) TEP is one of my favourite films (Ralph Fiennes! Kristin Scott Thomas!) and I only have it on video. Oops, what was I saying about bankruptcy..?

It's almost time to leave the office - as soon as I get home, I'm going to take the phone off the hook and settle down on the sofa with Horatio and Archie. *g* If only!

I am so pleased about Pix. Her new territory should be enough for a Pix of that size. Say silly baby-talk things to her from auntie dargie.

It's only a small house, with a courtyard the size of a large pocket handkerchief and a miniscule terrace. It sounded misleadingly grand in my post! Anyway, Pix seems to be contant so far. And the fence looks like something from ALcatraz - all that's missing are the searchlights, ditches and the snipers on corner watchtowers...

I'll give her a kiss and a aqueeze from you, then. Say hello to Caddy from me. :)

LOL! I just had a vision of Pix on a tiny motorcycle, jumping the fence ala Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. Vrooom!

I'm sure the boys hum the theme from "The Great Escape" every time they go out. Caddy sez "Hey" to all his overseas buddies.

Ah yes, those heady early days of a new obsession. How do I love thee? *g* What fun!

I wonder if Ioan's incredibly short-lived series...uh...I think it was called "Century City" will ever make it to video? He was v. cute; the show was eh.

Yes, it's great fun. Have you seen the Hornblower series? In other words, wouldn't you like a nice little new obsession of your own? *g*

I hadn't heard of Century City. Right now I'm contemplating getting Solomon and Gaenor (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000051YMO/qid%3D1096404882/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-1777133-3903845) which is only available in the US. I have always wanted to see it. That's my excuse, anyway...

I haven't watched any Hornblower, though it's on my to-see list. :-)

Right now I'm not looking for another obsession since I'm neck-deep in my David Thewlis fixation. There aren't enough hours in the day as it is. ;-)But I can certainly appreciate teh pretteh wherever I see it.

I'm not surprised that you hadn't heard of Century City (I'm 99.9% positive that was the title)--it lasted only about 5 minutes or so. But they release lots of other failed series on DVD, so maybe Ioan fans will get lucky.

Every time I feel an obsession coming on (and the symptoms are unmistakable *g*), I curse the local video rental places for their pathetic stock... *sigh*

::cuddles 8-dvd Hornblower set protectively and possessively to chest::

Why only neck-deep in David Thewlis? Surely that's rather limiting? ;P

I find that my obsessions tend to sneak up on me. You'd think by now I'd be aware of any warning signs, but apparently not. Ah well, keeps life interesting. heh

I was trying to be cool and low-key about it. Of course it's possible that my using the word "fixation" might have put the kibbosh on that... ;-)

...Greetings from your calves' foot jelly correspondent.Glad to hear Pixel is doing well;I have been keeping an eye on your journal for news of her.
...I don't mean to feed your I.G. obsession, but he had a starring part in a British tv drama called Warriors, about the conflict in Bosnia, when soldiers were ordered to do stay neutral with tragic consequences.I checked online, and it is available on VHS.(Made in 1999 by the BBC.)

Hi! Thanks for following Pix's progress - she has so many wellwishers that I'm not surprised she's recovered! I never got round to trying her with calf's foot jelly - knowing her, she'd probably have turned her nose up at it and walked away in disgust. She's like that... She'd rather eat cat biscuits than gourmet catfood, frex.

Are you a Ioan admirer too? I'd heard of Warriors - Amazon.uk only have it secondhand, priced at 40 pounds! D'you know anywhere else it's available, preferably for less?

...All the cats I've known would rather play with a paper bag than an expensive toy, same thing!I've long suspected that aliens live amongst us,and came from the planet Felinus!
...Had a quick check on ebay uk---there is one dvd going within the next 7 hours,as well as other versions of it,some with a lot of bidders, and one of the descriptions calls it deleted. All I can do is to promise to record it on VHS if it ever comes on again, and ask ny bro-in-law,who has a market stall,to keep an eye out for a copy.

This icon is Pixel in a special paper bag that my brother's German Girlfriend gave her last Christmas. It had a little cartoon story on the back, of this boy who buys a special toy for his cat, only for the cat to be very rude and ungrateful about it and to regard the paper bag as a proper toy for a cat. *g* Pix played with hers till it was in tatters.

I'd really like to see Warriors so if it's not too much trouble to record it should you come across it again, or if a cheap copy should appear, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!
