I am so fucking pissed off! And heavy-hearted and just...gah!

The cat I've been feeding that had five kittens - well, the kittens aren't even two weeks old yet, they're only eleven days old. And this stupid child has taken two of them away from their mother and is refusing to give them back. And her grandmother won't take them away from her and give them back to me so I can return them to their mother - because the stupid child is having a tantrum and it wouldn't be good to upset her further.

I went round to their house to try and get them to put the two kittens back. I was reasonable, explaining that the kittens need to be back with their mother for a while longer, and quite insistant. And I failed dismally. I feel I should have been forceful - should have barged into the house and wrested the kittens from the horrible child and marched off with them. I don't know - now I feel guilty as well as sad.

Why are people so fucking stupid and obstinate and selfish? I feel like crying.

Oh god, what a nightmare. Go you for trying to get them back. Could you go back over in a little while, once the idiot child has calmed down (and don't even get me started on rotten children) and try again? And if they still won't give you the kittens, tell them you're calling the Humane Society, then do it.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Also, you could inform the grandmother that one of the first signs a child will become a serial murderer is cruelty to animals...

Heh. I checked on the mother cat on my way home just now, and guess what? She had all five kittens in the box with her. Awww!

So it seemes my rant had some effect. We'll see how long it lasts. ::crosses fingers::

I was going to phone the SPCA tomorrow morning - will keep it in mind as a last resort.

The grandmother probably thinks you're going to keep them for yourself or something. And I'm incredibly irritated by grown-ups that are afraid of a kid throwing a tantrum (who's the adult here, c'mon!).

The two kittens are back with the mother cat, at least for tonight. I wish I could bring them all home, at least till the kittens are old enough to be homed. But I don't have any way of keeping them separate from my three - and Pablo sulked for two years the last time I introduced another cat to the household. He's eight years old now, and I promised myself that I wouldn't put him through that again.

Might try contacting the local cat society (I think there is one) to see if they could take her and the kittens for a few weeks - keep them safe. Once the kittens are homed, I'm planning on getting the mother neutered anyway, and will go on feeding her regularly - I know it's not ideal for her to be on the streets, but unless I can find someone to adopt her, then that's the best I can do.

And yes, I completely agree with you about adults giving in to children who throw tantrums. It's incredibly bad for the child to be allowed to get away with it. This particular child has certainly learnt to use it to her advantage. *sigh*

Christ, what irresponsible adults. I think you should try again, and lay in the guilt. Ask the fuckers how they'd like it if someone came and took their infant away. If that doesn't work, what Doola said -- somebody higher up will definitely intervene.

Ah, but these people don't think animals have feelings or rights. It's very hard to make any imnpression on the view that animals are just there for our amusement - and that a spoilt crying child is more important than the fate of two kittens. And I can't help feeling that the Catholic religion does nothing to counter this sort of anthropocentric view of animals. Gah.

I'm not convinced that the SPCA would intervene, but it's worth a try. The abductees have been returned to their mother, at least temporarily, so I'll see how things develop. But they're vulnerable where they are, and I'm trying desperately to think of someone who could take them for the next few weeks.

Have you let her have the facts straight between the eyes?

"If you don't put those kittens back, THEY WILL DIE. You don't have the skills to hand-raise a kitten. It's hard work. Do you want to kill these kittens?"

The kittens are back with their mother, at least for the moment. So it seems that something of what I said must have had an effect.

I'd really like to find somewhere safe for mum and babies, somewhere where they're not at the mercy of every idiot who walks past. ::racks brains::

Keep us posted on this if you can. If that kid thinks of animals as toys, it's possible she might go back to 'play' with them again. But I know you know that. :(

So far so good: she hasn't been back. And that's three times I've visited them today. ::droops::
